New Computer Setup Checklist: What Every User Should Do First
Getting a new computer is exciting — everything is fresh, fast, and ready to go. But before you start browsing, gaming, or working, there are a few important steps you should take to set up your device properly. Following this checklist ensures your computer stays secure, optimized, and running smoothly from day one.
Here’s the ultimate new computer setup checklist every user should follow.
- Unbox, Inspect, and Power On - Start by unboxing your computer and checking all accessories — power cables, adapters, manuals, and extras. Connect everything securely and power on the device to begin initial setup. You can ask for computer support through us also.
- Complete the Initial Setup (OS Configuration) - Your computer will guide you through, language and region selection, WiFi connection, user account creation (Windows/Mac), privacy and security settings, use a strong password and enable device encryption if available.
- Install All Available System Updates - New computers often ship with outdated software. Before doing anything else. Windows Settings → Windows Update → Check for Updates. Mac: System Settings → General → Software Update. This ensures better performance, stability, and security.
- Install Antivirus or Security Software - Even brand-new devices need protection. Enable Windows Security or macOS built-in protections. Or install a reputable third-party antivirus. Turn on firewalls and real-time protection. Safety first!
- Remove Bloatware and Unwanted Programs - Some new PCs come loaded with unnecessary software. Uninstall: Trial apps you won’t use, Manufacturer add-ons, unnecessary cloud or gaming launchers. A cleaner system boots faster and responds better.

- Set Up a Restore Point or System Recovery - Before installing a lot of programs, create a system restore point. This helps you recover the system if something breaks later.

- Connect Peripherals and Configure Devices - Attach all devices you use, such as, printers, scanners, external monitors, keyboards, mice, speakers and soundbars. Test everything to make sure it works properly.
